The program lets you play video, audio, and image content on Windows PCs. Moreover, you can use some basic editing tools, built into the software, to improve your creations. For instance, QuickTime lets you trim, merge, split, and rotate video clips within a few clicks. Worth noting it though for the sake of anyone else browsing here, as it's probably the player through which the security flaws can be exploited and you can choose not to install the player, but still install the other quicktime components during the install process via the official quicktime for windows download package from apple. Most importantly, everything you watch or create can be shared online via popular social media websites, including YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, etc. My concern was with the 'Quicktime Alternative' software apparently having at some point in time been installed the effects of which could be nothing, or could be the cause of issues of which I didn't yet know the root. Though I believe one still has to download quicktime 7 from apple and go through the install process and choose a directory for the install whether you do or do not check the option to install the player in addition to the other installable items.

That's true, in fact I saw that Avid suggested this as a potential workaround to the problem of Quicktime for windows no longer being updated and constituting a security threat, but still being necessary for Avid. Looking at the C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime Alternative directory, it's not really possible for me to tell if any of what's in there is or is not part of quicktime alternative.

I wonder now if there's fragments of it in some form anywhere on the system. I don't think it would be wise to run QuickTime alternative in any way shape or form on an Avid system as I'm worried that could cause issues. But the existence of the folder and the fact that it by default installed there suggests to me maybe it once did reside on this system. I updated quicktime, but one thing I found odd was that by default the new quikctime version installed using an installer downloaded from the apple website, by default installed to C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime Alternative.Īs near as I can tell no one has installed QuickTime Alternative on the system and what I've downloaded very much appears to be quicktime, not Quicktime Alternative. I've begun encountering a problem with Avid which I have some reason to believe may be related to an incompatible quicktime version number with the Avid version being run. The machine is not mine, however I'll be operating it for some time and can fix issues for myself where they appear. It's a necessary requirement to run Avid Media Composer which is what the system has been built to do. So before it's brought up, let me start by saying I do have to have quicktime installed on the system.
